How the Free Bet Calculation Works
A stake-not-returned (SNR) free bet is the usual kind: if it wins, you keep the winnings but not the stake itself. In matched betting you back your selection with the free bet at a bookmaker and lay the same selection at an exchange, locking in a profit whatever the result.
Retention
Retention is the share of the free bet you turn into guaranteed profit, and higher is better. You get the best retention when the back and lay odds are close together and the odds are on the higher side.
Important
Matched betting depends on bookmaker promotions and their terms, which vary and can change. This tool shows the math, not a guarantee, so always read the offer terms and check the live odds before placing anything.
Getting Better Retention
Retention is the share of a free bet you convert into guaranteed profit, and it moves with the odds you choose. With a stake-not-returned free bet you keep the winnings but not the stake, so higher odds return a larger share of the face value. That's why matched bettors tend to use free bets on longer prices rather than short favorites.
The Trade-Offs
Longer odds also mean a bigger lay liability, so you need more money available on the exchange to place the bet at all. Commission comes straight off your profit, and the gap between the back price and the lay price does the same, so the closer those two prices sit, the better your retention.
Read Which Type You Have
Check the offer terms before you calculate anything. A stake-returned free bet behaves like a normal bet with a refunded stake and needs different math entirely. Also look for restrictions on minimum odds, which markets qualify, and whether the resulting winnings carry their own wagering requirement.
