What Makes a Bluff Work

A bluff works when your opponent can fold a better hand than yours. That requires two things: a believable story, where the way you've bet makes sense for a strong hand, and an opponent capable of folding. Bluffing isn't about bravado, it's about fold equity, the chance that your bet makes a better hand go away. Without that, you're just donating chips.

When to Bluff

  • Against fewer opponents: the more players in a pot, the more likely someone has a hand worth calling. Bluff into one or two players, not five.
  • On boards that fit your story: if the cards make it plausible you hit a strong hand, your bluff is more convincing.
  • In position: acting last gives you more information and control, making bluffs safer.
  • With a semi-bluff: bluffing with a drawing hand that can still improve is far stronger than bluffing with nothing, because you have two ways to win.
  • Against the right opponent: never bluff a player who calls everything. Bluffs work against thinking players who can fold.

Bet Sizing Basics

Bet sizing should match your goal. Betting for value with a strong hand, you want a size your opponent will call. Bluffing, you want the smallest size that still does the job, since you're risking chips you don't want to lose. Most sizing is best thought of relative to the pot, a half-pot or two-thirds-pot bet, rather than a random amount.

Don't Give Away Sizing Tells

A common leak is betting big with bluffs and small with value, or the reverse. Observant opponents pick up on it fast and exploit you. The fix is to size your bluffs and your value bets the same way in the same situations, so your bet gives nothing away about your hand.

Common Mistakes

  • Bluffing calling stations who won't fold.
  • Bluffing too often, so observant players start calling you down.
  • Using bet sizes that don't match the story you're telling.
  • Bluffing into multiple opponents and hoping they all fold.
Our view

Beginners bluff too much and size inconsistently. Bluff less, bluff with a reason, and size your bets the same whether you're bluffing or value betting. Predictable sizing is what gets you read, consistent sizing is what keeps you hidden.
