Understanding Pot Odds

Pot odds compare what you can win to what you must risk. They help determine if a call is profitable long-term.

Common Draws

Flush draw: 9 outs (~19% turn, ~35% turn+river)

Open-ended straight: 8 outs (~17% turn, ~32% turn+river)

Gutshot: 4 outs (~9% turn, ~17% turn+river)

Understanding Pot Odds

Pot odds compare the current pot size to the cost of calling a bet. They tell you the return you get on a call and help determine whether drawing is mathematically correct. Mastering pot odds is fundamental to winning poker.

How to Calculate Pot Odds

Divide the amount you must call by the total pot after you call. If the pot is 100 and your opponent bets 50, you must call 50 into a pot of 150. Your pot odds are 50 divided by 150, or 33 percent. You need at least 33 percent equity to break even on the call.

Comparing to Your Equity

Estimate your chance of winning the hand. A flush draw has roughly 35% equity on the flop with two cards to come. If pot odds require only 25% equity, calling is profitable. If they require 40% equity, folding is correct.

Implied Odds

Implied odds account for future betting. Even if current pot odds are insufficient, you might call if you expect to win more money when you hit your draw. However, be careful not to overestimate implied odds. They require opponents who will pay you off.
