How Baccarat Works

Baccarat is one of the simplest casino games. Two hands are dealt, Player and Banker. You bet on which will win, or if they'll tie. That's it. No decisions, no strategy during play.

Card Values

Cards 2-9 = face value

10, J, Q, K = 0 points

Ace = 1 point

Hand values are calculated modulo 10 (only the last digit counts). A hand of 7 + 8 = 15 is worth 5.

The Deal

Player and Banker each receive two cards. The goal is to get as close to 9 as possible.

Natural Win: Either hand totaling 8 or 9 on the first two cards wins immediately (unless both have naturals, then higher wins or tie).

Third Card Rules: If no natural, complex rules determine if either hand draws a third card. You don't need to memorize these: the dealer handles it automatically.

The Three Bets

Banker Bet

House Edge: 1.06%

The best bet in baccarat. Wins slightly more often than Player (45.86% vs 44.62%) due to third card rules favoring Banker. Casino takes 5% commission on Banker wins, which is why the edge isn't even lower.

Pays: 0.95:1 (even money minus 5% commission)

Player Bet

House Edge: 1.24%

Slightly worse than Banker, but no commission. Some players prefer it for simplicity.

Pays: 1:1

Tie Bet

House Edge: 14.36%

A terrible bet. Yes, it pays 8:1 (or 9:1 at some casinos), but ties only occur 9.52% of the time. The house edge is enormous.

Never bet on Tie. This isn't opinion. It's math.

Optimal Strategy

Baccarat strategy is simple: bet Banker, always. That's it.

Some players switch to Player after Banker loses, believing in "streaks" or patterns. This is superstition. Each hand is independent. The cards don't know what happened before.

Why Banker is Best

Even with the 5% commission, Banker has the lowest house edge. Over 1,000 bets of $100:

Banker: Expected loss = $1,060

Player: Expected loss = $1,240

Tie: Expected loss = $14,360

Pattern Tracking

Casinos provide scorecards for tracking past results. This is entertainment, not strategy. Past results don't influence future outcomes. The shoe is shuffled randomly, and each hand is independent.

If patterns worked, casinos wouldn't helpfully provide scorecards.

Variations

Punto Banco

The most common form, especially in North America. All actions are dictated by the rules, no player decisions. This is what most people mean by "baccarat."

Chemin de Fer

Players take turns being the Banker and can make decisions about drawing cards. Rare outside of European casinos.

Mini Baccarat

Lower stakes version of Punto Banco. Faster pace, smaller table, lower minimums. Same rules and odds.

No Commission Baccarat

Avoids the 5% commission on Banker wins, but Banker winning with 6 pays only 0.5:1 (half). This increases the house edge to about 1.46% on Banker. Standard baccarat is better.

Side Bets

Many casinos offer side bets like Player/Banker Pair, Perfect Pair, Big/Small, etc. These all have significantly higher house edges than the main bets, typically 5-15%.

Side bets exist because the main game's edge is too low for casinos. They're designed to extract more money. Avoid them.

Bankroll Management

The 5% commission on winning Banker bets exists because without it, Banker would be a positive expectation bet. The commission reduces Banker's edge to casino-profitable levels while still being player-favorable compared to most games.

Card Counting in Baccarat

Theoretically, card counting can provide an edge in baccarat, certain deck compositions favor Player or Banker beyond normal expectations. However, the practical edge gained is minuscule (less than 0.1%) and requires enormous bet spreads to exploit.

Professional card counters avoid baccarat because blackjack offers much larger edges from counting. Baccarat counting systems exist but aren't practically profitable outside of theoretical discussions.

Baccarat Banque

Similar to Chemin de Fer but the Banker position is more permanent, often held by the casino or a designated player throughout a shoe.

Mini Baccarat

Pattern Recognition

Casinos provide "road" displays showing previous results, Big Road, Big Eye Road, Small Road, Cockroach Road. Players study these patterns believing they predict future outcomes.

This is pure superstition. Each hand is independent. Previous results don't influence future hands. The roads exist because casinos know players enjoy them, not because they provide advantage.
